After meeting at university, co-founders Jared Ebersole and Luke St. Amand completely bootstrapped Lectec — and left stable careers to dedicate themselves to the company.
Jared sold the majority share of the business he had been running since high school and invested everything into Lectec. Luke quit his fast-tracked engineering job at Amazon.
Both had technical backgrounds — Jared in hardware and AI, and Luke in data science — but neither had experience in full-stack development. They wanted to build a web-based learning platform to complement Lectec's assembly kits, but faced resource challenges:
Learn full-stack development from scratch. With no budget for hiring developers, Luke had to handle all software development himself. Traditional coding was time-consuming and costly. He needed development platforms that were fast and intuitive to learn, while still offering professional-grade functionality.
Get to market fast with a learning platform. The development solution for Lectec’s learning management system (LMS) needed to handle complex logic, and ideally manage all DevOps and infrastructure for them.
Luke built Lectec Academy in just two months. The LMS is a public web-based app, complete with interactive content for students and structured lesson plans for teachers.
Lectec Academy supports a wide range of learning features — including interactive assembly guides with images and videos, quizzes, and games.
Luke built Lectec Academy with a Xano backend and WeWeb frontend. He connected the platforms without any infrastructure setup or maintenance. "WeWeb flawlessly integrates with Xano."
Building on a dedicated backend platform also gave Luke a clean separation of logic between the backend and frontend — making development more future-proof and simple.
Many schools block email access for students, so Lectec needed another authentication method. With Xano's built-in user management, they were able to create student accounts within Lectec Academy and implement custom authentication logic. Luke credits that as a major help in accelerating the development process.
Luke initially looked into AWS Amplify, but realized it would be too time-consuming to self study. After evaluating Supabase, he ultimately chose Xano for its powerful function stack.
Lectec could rapidly build custom APIs without prior experience — and still develop in a professional-grade environment
This was a game changer. Luke had never written an API before this project, but the function stack made it easy to understand and implement complex logic. "Xano's outstanding factor is its function stack — being able to very clearly describe the business logic and what the API is doing."
Xano's branching, version history, instant rollbacks, and live/test data environments also allowed Lectec to iterate rapidly and confidently.
Xano's visual development platform is more intuitive than AI code generation
"Obviously ChatGPT makes it easier to write code for simple web apps. But anything with user management, authentication, complexity — that's not an easy thing to do with ChatGPT," Luke explained.
Debugging AI-generated scripts would still be a headache, especially without the foundational full-stack coding knowledge. Luke bypassed this completely with Xano and WeWeb.
Xano provides extensive learning and support resources, making it easier to start building from square one
Luke found both Xano and WeWeb's tutorials, office hours, and documentation invaluable in getting up to speed quickly. He regularly attended Xano's weekly live office hours for personalized help from the team. "There's tons of stuff at the beginning that made it super easy to start."
This timeline would have been impossible with traditional development. "Don't try to hack it around and do everything with full code. It's not worth the time nowadays. This is the future of what everyone will be building on. Why try to work like a dinosaur in the past?"
Xano and WeWeb provide scalable platforms that easily handle growing users and complexity. Lectec is just getting started. They debuted on Shark Tank, and they're excited to inspire even more students through real-world engineering.
